149. The Ministry of Tenderness

18 Jun

The Belgian municipality of Kruibeke is ruled over by a rather affectionate mayor, Antoine Denert. A mayor so affectionate, that he started up a whole new local ministry to focus upon it. The Ministry of Tenderness. A ministry designed to change a cold unloving world. Antoine Denert states:

“people don’t cuddle anymore, and that’s the reason why there are so many conflicts.”

This ministry is all about being nice, and that is rather… nice. He claimed to want to inspire other governments, spurring them onwards towards newer and nicer policies. The question he poses is this: “Why not change the Ministry of Defense into the Ministry of Tenderness?.” His justification? The war in Iraq would never have started.”

However it was more than founding a ministry for this mayor, to show off his dedication he enthusiastically vowed to set an example and “set an example and start in my own village by caressing, cuddling, and kissing as many people as possible.”

His enthusiasm and the very existence of the Ministry of Tenderness are not huge successes, but they are nice – which is nice.

I think I have found you another fact: Great Molasses Flood. The Boston Molassacre killed 21 when tank of molasses exploded sending a tidal wave at 56 km/h. They have Bocce courts there now.

Sweet! (see what I did there?) This sounds like a good piece, I’ll look into it and perform the research. It should be very interesting, thank you again. I’ll get right on it.

I lived in Belgium for 4 years. And I can tell you people are always hugging and kissing. It’s the national pastime. There is a different beer brewed in Belgium for every day of the year. Mayor Denert may have been imbibing.
